A Walled-Garden Pool

An in-ground pool built inside an old walled garden, with a porcelain terrace, oak pergola and lawn held within the original brickwork.

A walled garden is a rare thing to be handed. The brick has stood far longer than any of us, and the task is to add a pool to it without the walls ever looking as though they had been waiting for one.

The pool sits low in the middle of the garden, under a cover that keeps it warm and clean between swims. A porcelain terrace runs out to the old brick on every side, wide enough to hold seating in the shade of the pergola and still leave the lawn open.

Building inside walls like these means every load of spoil and every delivery of stone comes through a single gate. We sequenced the groundworks, the shell and the terrace so the garden was never left torn up for longer than it had to be.

What is left reads as though the pool had always belonged there. That was the whole point.
