A Walled Garden in Sunningdale

An enclosed Sunningdale garden set out as rooms: a box parterre in gravel, a putting green, lit sandstone paths, and a dark-tiled pool beside a garden room.

A garden this size can end up as one long lawn with things arranged along it. This one reads as a series of rooms instead, each with its own floor and its own reason to walk to it.

Nearest the house, clipped box turns through a gravel parterre behind black railings. A sandstone path curves past a bench and a painted sculpture to a putting green on the upper level, held back by a low stone wall. Laser-cut screens are set between the boundary hedges.

The lighting does the rest. After dark, uplights in the borders and along the wall keep the shape of the garden legible from the house, and the pool at the far end sits on a grey porcelain surround with the garden room lit behind it.
