A Walled Garden in Chobham
A derelict circular pond taken out of an old Chobham walled garden and replaced with a gravel sitting circle edged in stone setts, with shade planting around it.
The pond had stopped being a pond. It was drained, the liner was showing, and a net had been thrown over the whole thing. That corner of the garden had quietly gone out of use.
It came out, and the space it left became somewhere to sit. A curved oval of cream gravel is held by sandstone setts, with hostas, ferns and heucheras planted around the edge to suit ground that spends most of the day in shade.
The old brick wall and the York stone paving were left alone. They are the best things in the garden, and the new work sits inside them rather than over them.
