A Stone Terrace at a Period Country House
A square terrace of pale stone laid into the lawn of a red-brick country house, edged in brick and set about with weathered stone urns.
A house like this sets the terms. Victorian red brick, a verandah under a glazed canopy, a domed corner tower, and open ground falling away to a wooded valley. Anything laid out in front of it has to look as though it had always been there.
The terrace answers with restraint. It is a plain square of pale stone, edged in brick and set flush into the grass, with weathered stone urns standing at its corners and along its sides. Nothing is raised and nothing competes with the house.
The aerial views were taken while the work was still going on, and they show what the terrace is for. It sits square to the verandah on the lawn above the valley, close enough to walk out to and far enough away to look back at the house from.
