A Pool with a Retractable Enclosure

A blue-mosaic pool with a full-width entry stair, a slatted cover along one side and an arched enclosure that draws over the water when the weather turns.

Winter is the honest season for a pool like this. The trees behind the yew are bare, the sun sits low across the water, and the pool is still clear and still open. The arched enclosure parked at the far end can be drawn along the whole length to close it.

The lining is iridescent blue mosaic, the terrace pale silver-grey porcelain, and a full-width stair drops in at one corner, wide enough to sit on. The slatted automatic cover parks along one long run of the coping.

The garden around it does as much work as the pool. A raised timber deck and a bed of ornamental grasses run along the far side, a clipped yew hedge closes the boundary behind them, and a rusted steel sculpture stands against the green. At the near corner a loquat and a phormium hold the ground where the estate railing steps down to the terrace.
