A Pool in a Sloping Garden

A turquoise-mosaic pool with a curved Roman end, built into a steeply banked garden and edged in tumbled cream travertine against the woodland behind.

The ground falls away steeply behind the house. The construction photograph shows what that means in practice: a blockwork shell standing in the bank, part filled with water, with the travertine only beginning to go down around it.

Finished, the pool is lined in mottled turquoise glass mosaic and edged in tumbled cream travertine. A curved Roman end steps into the shallow water with a black handrail beside it, and a blue solar cover sits on its roller at the far end.

A strip of lawn runs along one side to a close-board fence, and behind the fence the trees take over. It is an unfussy family pool, floats and all.
